Keep New Hanover County Beautiful has been around since the 1980’s. As recently as early 2017, because we lost all of our county funding, we also lost motivation and direction, along with just about all of our board.
The spring of 2017 brought about new energy, a younger, passionate board with a new direction. Our primary focus became collecting and recycling cigarette butt litter; to keep this litter out of our Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. Since the inception of this program, we have installed over 300 cigarette butt canisters in NHC and we have collected and recycled 1,872,000 discarded cigarettes (that’s almost one ton!).
Our other programs and initiatives are: Seabins, monthly cleanups, tree and canopy restoration and working closely with UNCW students to introduce them to how non-profits work and to help them with a sense of responsibility and purpose.
